Project Description: Medieval Meteorology in Context

Beate Fricke (Bern, Switzerland), Andreas Lammer (Nijmegen, The Netherlands)

A special issue of the journal Das Mittelalter: Perspektiven mediävistischer Forschung of the Mediävistenverband will invite colleagues from the history of science, philosophy and art, from literary studies and from historical subjects to investigate how phenomena of the sky and materials of meteorology were the starting point for theory formation, enabling a debate on meteorological theories between artists, writers and natural philosophers which contributed to the classification, understanding, or spiritual interpretation of weather phenomena. The thematic issue will not only demonstrate the comprehensive, existential significance of meteorology as a scientific endeavour in the Middle Ages, but will also examine the religious dimension of weather phenomena alongside their contribution to the respective interpretive contexts.
